 Over the years, a number of our Private Clients who were business owners asked if we would oversee their company-sponsored retirement plans. While we were prepared to manage the investment options, we knew that we were not prepared to deal with the technical plan design and compliance that goes along with managing a retirement plan.
To meet client demand, we hired dedicated professionals with a substantial amount of high-level experience in the technical elements of qualified plans and launched Acropolis Retirement Plan Solutions in 2007.
We were surprised to learn how ineffectually most 401(k) plans are managed. As we meet with plan sponsors, we continue to find that:
- Participants are poorly educated about their 401(k) plan and investing in general.

- There aren’t an appropriate number of investment options: some offer too few options to create a diversified portfolio and some offer so many that participants are bewildered.
- Most plans aren’t served by a co-fiduciary, which results in unnecessary risk.
- Plans' sponsors do not receive the service they deserve and require.
We have set out to change all of these things by acting as a co-fiduciary, reducing and unbundling fees, allowing all parties to see every cost, creating an outstanding service model, and offering participant education that produces positive investor behavior.
